All
significant changes and progressive steps taken by America, regarding
racial equality, came from the people. The election of Barack Obama is
the ultimate expression of this reality. Electing
the nation’s first African American president in 2008 occurred because
of years of struggle and sacrifice on the parts of those who came
before us. We tell this story to document the people and events
involved in the struggle, and to ensure that the historical
significance of Obama’s election is not overshadowed by the
complexities and extraordinary challenges our country now faces.
